A journey in search of a literary character may look a bit odd, but here it becomes a fascinating foray into the inscrutable complexities of reality and fiction. There’s history, there’s personal experience, there’s fiction, and there’s film and theatre, all rolled into one in the heart of the reader/spectator. In Search of Narayani is all about finding out the how and why of this mesmerizing phenomenon. All in relation to Vaikom Muhammad Basheer’s unforgettable character Narayani in his unforgettable novella, Mathilukal (The Walls).
Journeys begin from history, and history from journeys. Even while they end up as a realisation, journeys have as their constant companion nothing but uncertainty. Whatever decisions or precautions are taken in advance, it is this uncertainty that keeps company with the traveller at every bend and turn. A writer who spent much of his life travelling far and wide. As he comes back he is full of stories. A man who calls himself a humble historian. An invisible woman character created by such a man. This journey is in search of her.
